What is a Switch 2 Game-Key Card?

A Game-Key Card is a physical Nintendo Switch 2 cartridge that does not contain the game. It contains a licence. When you insert it, the console downloads the full game from the internet to its storage, and from then on the card works as the key that lets you play.
What it means in practice
- You need an internet connection the first time. The whole game has to be downloaded before you can play, and some games are over 20 GB.
- You need free storage. The download goes to the internal storage or a microSD Express card, exactly like a digital purchase. Use the storage calculator to check it fits.
- The card must be in the console to play. It is the proof that you own the game.
- You can still lend, sell or trade it. It is a normal cartridge, and it is not tied to your Nintendo Account: the game starts on whichever console the card is inserted into.
How to tell before you buy
Game-Key Card releases carry a special Game-Key Card mark on the front of the box. Many retailers also add “(Game-Key Card)” to the product name.
